One type of financial aid is offered in the form of scholarships. Scholarships are FREE money that does not have to be paid back! Scholarships and awards are offered by many community groups and organizations as well as individual colleges so you should check out all resources.

Going Merry

What is Going Merry? It is a free scholarship search and application platform that allows students to find and apply for scholarships faster. On Going Merry, students are matched with eligible scholarships and then apply directly from the website. Applications are auto-filled with any information students have already provided. Students can also apply to multiple scholarships with one application form and request documents like letters of transcript, right on the platform. They also even have mobile apps on iOS and Android.

LendEDU Scholarship Search

LendEDU was founded in 2014 with the mission to empower consumers to make educated and informed decisions by providing free financial resources and unbiased advice. Refer to our financial aid page for more links to scholarship searches. Scholarships are for college-bound high school seniors unless otherwise specified.

Elks Most Valuable Student (MVS) Award

Open to any high school senior who is a U.S. citizen. Applicants do not need to be related to an Elks member. Winners are outstanding students, at or near the top of their class, and are active in their schools and communities. Applicants are judged on leadership, service, academic performance, and financial need. Awards range from $4,000 to $30,000 over four years. The application form must be completed online by November 12, 2025.

National Honor Society

This award is for senior National Honor Society members in good standing that model the four pillars of NHS.

Lamber-Goodnow Scholarships

Eligible students must be innovative and highly creative high school or college students. Essay submission is required.

The Hagan Scholarship

Eligible students must have a 3.5 cumulative average and enroll in an eligible four-year college or university (list of participating colleges is on-line) and must maintain a four-year or less graduation schedule. The student must work 240 hours from January 1 until commencement of the fall semester in college. There is a financial criteria that must be met to be eligible to apply.

Elks Emergency Educational Grant

This grant provides undergraduate college financial assistance to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks in the form of renewable, one-year grants of up to $5,000 as long as a student meets all other eligibility requirements. The Elk parent or step-parent must have been a member in good standing for at least one year before they became totally disabled and must continue to be an Elk in good standing when the application for assistance is made. The student must be under 24 years old, unmarried and a full-time undergraduate student. NYS Elks Association Vocational Scholarship

Available to individuals who plan to attend a trade or vocational program to pursue a certificate or credential. The scholarship is available to graduating high school students or individuals who are within four years of earning their HS diploma or GED. Applicants must be a child or stepchild of a NYS Elk in good standing, a resident of NY, and a US citizen. Applications must be submitted to the secretary of the parent's lodge.

NYS Elks Association Scholarships

Available to children/step-children of NYS Elks members in good standing. Applications must be filed with the Secretary of the sponsoring Lodge. High School seniors who want to apply must complete the Elks Most Valuable Student Award application

Thiel Fellowship

Student who is interested in building new things. Founded by technology entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel in 2011. The Thiel Fellowship is a two-year program that offers 20-30 fellowships in the value of $100,000 over a two year period.

The Beauty & Wellness Scholarship

The student must be a female who is a graduating high school senior or current college undergraduate in a 2-year, 4-year or technical/vocational school and a US citizen. Open to students of all GPAs and disciplines.

To be eligible for a Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship, an applicant must: be a graduating, minority high school senior, be a United States citizen, present evidence of financial need, demonstrate a record of academic excellence, demonstrate leadership potential and a dedication to community service, submit an official SAT and/or ACT test exam score from junior or senior year*

Award based on achievement in school and the community. There are several award categories of varying amounts. Applicants do not need to be a DAR member.

The applicant must be a high school senior who is the child/step-child, grandchild/step-grandchild, or legal ward of a living, dues paying Elk in good standing. No ACT/SAT score is required.

American Legion Auxiliary Children of Warriors National Presidents' Scholarship

This award supports the children of warriors. Candidates for this award must be daughters, sons, grandsons, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, great-grandsons of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion listed on the website.

Air Force Academy Scholarships

The United States Air Force Academy, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a military academy for officer candidates for the United States Air Force. An Academy education is valued at more than $416,000, yet there is no cost to cadets. What is required in return is a commitment to serve as an officer in the Air Force. The length of commitment depends on your career path and other, such as graduate or medical school, that may extend it. Elks Emergency Grants

These grants are for any student who will attend college or is currently attending college that has a disabled parent that is a member of the Elks. This grant is also available for a student whose parents was n Elk at the time of death. This grant, for up to $4,000 a year, is NOT an academic scholarship and can be renewed each year of college attendance. Deadline: on-going.

The Excelsior Scholarship

Student must be a resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term and have a combined federal adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less. See scholarship link for additional requirements and deadline information.

Firemen's Association HELP Tuition Reimbursement Program

Firemen's Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan is a tuition reimbursement program for students attending community colleges up to 80 credit hours. Courses in any area can be taken. Student volunteers are eligible to have up to 100% of their tuition paid to them in exchange for fulfilling specific requirements with a volunteer fire department. This incentive is being offered to help address a shortage of members with New York Volunteer Fire Departments. ROTC

With high costs of attending college, more and more students are considering Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs to help pay for college. ROTC is a college program offered at over 1,700 colleges and universities across the United States. ROTC prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. military. In exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, cadets commit to serve in the military after graduation. As detailed below, each service branch has its own take on ROTC and ROTC scholarships. The Coast Guard does not have ROTC program.

St. Lawrence University - Fort Drum Scholarship: This award is to honor Fort Drum military dependents or soldiers finishing their tour of duty by facilitating their obtaining college degrees at St. Lawrence University. This scholarship will meet all financial need that exceeds he total amount of other awards received by qualified students.
